They say this tradition started in 1958 or 1959 with
Bear Bryant in Alabama. With Dallas police everywhere the coach likely does not need State
Troopers to escort him on and off the field. But it's a great show and tradition. Definitely a
southern thing. Wonder if Duffy was every escorted by state troopers? (Might be
a nice gesture to switch to Dallas beat cops.)
